Cork City Council Employee Commuter Survey

Closed29 Sep, 2020, 11:45am - 9 Oct, 2020, 6:00pm

You may recall a recent Air Quality Survey circulated earlier in the summer to hear peoples view and experiences of air quality in Cork City.  A staggering 744 people responded to the survey and the results can be seen on Cork City Council's website.   In this latest 5 minute survey we are asking to hear from Cork City Council employees about your commute to work and the factors that determine your mode of transport.

Research carried out by UCC and NUI Galway shows travelling to work and school accounts for over a third of the journeys taken by Irish people each year. Each week “the school run requires Irish parents to drive a staggering 7 million km – emitting an estimated 1,200 tonnes of CO2 emissions; equivalent to the annual driving of about 400 cars”.

It is widely known that travel and air quality is linked.  It has been reported that one of the few positives during the Covid-19 pandemic was improved air quality worldwide.  Travel restrictions in particular have led to a dramatic reduction in global carbon emissions.  In Ireland the EPA have reported a decrease in concentrations of 50% of the pollutant nitrogen dioxide (NO2) at many monitoring stations across the National Air Quality Monitoring Network.

Now with restrictions easing air pollution levels have rebounded in many cities worldwide.  The challenge will be to see whether the short term improvement in air quality has made people more aware of the benefits of cleaner air and whether people are now choosing other modes of transport for their commute.

Please enter your email at the end of the survey if you would like to be entered into a draw for the opportunity to win one of the following:

  •   A voucher for The Bike Shed  to the value of €500
  • A FItbit Inspire HR, Activity Tracker

The results of the survey will inform the objectives and targets of the forthcoming Air Quality Strategy.
