Observations

Creating a liveable city

General Submission or Chapter Specific Submission:
Topics:

A most important part of a city is to me a library. I would love to see the current city library expanded and modernised. I would like to have a library that invites to stay there all day, a place that invites to relax and feel comfortable, to work, to focus, to create and to develop. I imagine that basic needs are covered, so it should have lockers/ wardrobe, clean restrooms, a social area where you can speak with a cafe that offers drinks and healthy snacks. Also working areas with internet access and power sockets along the windows, so you can sit at a window, work and also look out. A children area with bean bags and paintings on the wall. Stools that can be used to sit in between shelves, when you are about to research, comfortable areas to sit at open spaces. And of course a good selection of Books and Media. The question is on how to finance it.  What if people that use the library pay a small yearly contribution. There could be a one time 6 month trial offer for e.g. 5,00 Euros and a normal yearly fee of 20,00 Euros, with reduction for groups like children, students etc. I also see the library as a location for cultural events. Readings, little concerts, workshops on how to do things, cultural or informative events. A place, where people like to get together to develop.

Green Infrastructure, Open Space and Recreation

General Submission or Chapter Specific Submission:
Topics:

Parks in-between residential areas

  • little green areas and small parks in-between residential areas, as for example at Victoria Road, Deer Park, Bishopscourt Park, or even bigger ones.

Urban gardening

  • encourage and support urban gardening
  • It helps to keep the green or available spaces in a good condition
  • It helps to avoid plastic and long logistic chains, teaches how to grow your own food, it brings people together in an open space (Covid)

Carrigrohane Road/ N22:

  • Extension of the walk from Fitzgerald Park along the Lee River
  • reduce noise level using noise protection walls at the road and grow hedges and trees along the road
  • Gated playground, skate park, play field like e.g. in Ballincollig
  • Playfield can be used for schools and sport clubs

Big recreational area

  • a big wood and park, preferably along the river or around a lake which is not far from the city center and can be reached by public transport
  • Or around an area like the airport, which would, based on emissions and noise, not be ideal for residential area and have on the other hand a positive effect on emissions
  • a little open animal park, not a zoo, animals that especially children can learn about and interact with,
  • Facilities and cafes with healthy food
  • A little organic farm that can contribute to the cafe
  • A learning center that informs about how to grow food and prepare food
  • things can be added during the years

Highways

  • consider bridges and tunnels for highways, so that wildlife can travel safely.

Benches

  • more benches along Lee river or at parks
Open space
recreation
parks
Biodiversity

Environmental Quality

I watched many children throwing plastic bottles etc. into Lee river with adults or legal guardians watching and not commenting it. Especially children, the next generation, should learn about recycling. Plastic pollution is already immense issue and with the overseas export market closing down, it will get worse. What I miss in the city center are recycling bins with logos and more public information and advertisement regarding waste management.

Maybe larger spaces can be turned into a mall worn open space and give opportunity for retail companies to rent a small space instead of the entire building. Smaller, local companies, for example would be given the opportunity to present their products or services more affordably and still reach a large number of customers that walk through the building/ mall. Thinking about the Roche house, I can also imagine to turn the upper part into a community space, like a library, with the ground floor hosting cafes, little shops, local retailers, farm stands etc.
