While i welcome the draft proposals to improve the cycle network in Cork, I do not feel the Council has gone far enough. If Cork is to stand any chance of proving even remotely attractive to international investors and international and national younger people, it needs to create attractive and liveable spaces. Younger generations now prioritise sustainability, ease of travel and modes of travel such as walking and cycling. Consider the increasing number of younger people who do not have drivers licences, let alone own cars, and you can understand the changing priorities of people. Unfortunately, Cork remains dominated by cars. I believe that if significant effort was made to reduce car dominace and drastically expand the segregated cycle network, Cork could become a standard bearer for sustainable transport in Ireland. Focus should be placed on creating a number of completeley segregated cycle ''highways'' that cross the city, enabling commuters, school children and recreational users to travel throughout Cork City free from the danger of cars. It should be an objective of the Council to prioritise these developments above any road works or developments, particularly considering the impending climate crisis we face.
