Observations on cycle lanes
Tuairim
The new cycle lanes on South Mall and by the Quays to join up to Centre Park Road out to the Marina have made a huge difference. Well done to the City Council . There are others too and these are much appreciated.
A few things to note on these new cycle lanes and the existing ones :
1) They are the same colour as the road. They need to be painted a different colour to stop people walking on them. Even though there is a footpath alongside the Idle Hour people are choosing to walk the cycle lane parallel. Children are now using this to get to the Marina and I have seen them swerving outside the cycle lane with traffic behind them. Signs are also needed to ensure people dont walk there. It can get very busy with cyclists at weekends in particular.
2) Everybody walks on the cycle lane from Merchants Quay to Angelsea street . Its the same colour as the footpath. Ive been raising this for years. God knows when it was last painted. Have seen several near misses there, old people walking on it because they think its a footpath etc. Also, if you ring a bell to let people know you are coming people are abusive. Please paint the cycle lanes a different colour. Also the bicycles sprayed on the ground are completely worn out. Signs are required to show people that footpaths are for walking and cycle lanes are for cycling.
3) The cycle lane from Bull mccabes up airport hill is falling to pieces and needs maintenance and painting. Also its very dangerous with a tiny width for cyclists on both sides. Woud be great to see them widened both sides and barriers put in. At the moment most people are terrified to cycle it. Think of how many airport and Cork Business Park staff would cycle if this was done properly.
4) Painting and maintenance of cycle lanes should take place all year round so there is a uniform look and condition city wide. Joined up thinking and joined up Teams required.
Painting of cycle lanes required city wide. They should not be the same colour as roads / footpaths.
To avoid accidents and make safer for cyclists particularly children.
