While the cycle routes planned between Little Island and the Lower Glanmire Road will serve commuters living in the city and working at Little Island, commuters living in the North East suburbs of Mayfield and Montenotte would be highly unlikely to avail of them due to the danger of cycling Northward on the North Ring road.  Given the disparity of speed between cyclists and vehicles proceeding Northwards due to the steep slope, the presence of 2 narrow lanes with no hard shoulder, the division from single land to two lanes at the bottom and the lane changing near the top caused by traffic turning right, it would be excessively risky for commuters to consider cycling.  There is no bus or rail service linking the areas so the only option is to travel by car.  There is a sufficiently wide grass verge to the West of the road to accomodate a cycle lane so it would not cost a lot to provide one.  In my opinion, there is no need for a cycle lane on that section going down (Southward) as there is little difference between the speed of vehicles and bicycles which dramatically reduces risk.
