Notice Under Section 38 of the Road Traffic Act 1994

Pursuant to the provisions of Section 38 of the Road Traffic Act 1994, as amended in Section 31 of the Road Traffic and Roads Act 2023, Cork City Council hereby gives notice that it intends to carry out traffic management and public realm enhancement measures at the eastern end of St. Patrick’s Street, with works focused on the junction of St. Patrick’s Street, Winthrop Street, Maylor Street, William Street and Bowling Green Street.

The proposed measures support the over-arching goals of the Cork City Centre Rejuvenation Plan and the Cork City Centre Development & Operations Directorate Action Plan 2025 - 2030, in particular to enhance public transport within the City Centre, increase the vitality of the City Centre, and facilitate improved public health and well-being. This will be delivered through an ambitious, targeted enhancement programme in Cork’s City Centre, complemented by public realm improvements. The proposed works will operate on a trial basis.

The scheme has been facilitated by the temporary suspension of the taxi stands, the relocation of bus stops and the removal of redundant street furniture. These measures will remove unnecessary or outdated street furniture, including a hut and some railings, to improve the layout of the plaza on the eastern side.

Overall, the combination of these initiatives will result in the decluttering and greening of St. Patrick’s Street with the key elements entailing:

  • The re-location of some bus stops from St Patrick’s St/Winthrop St Plaza a short distance away to just north of Maylor St;
  • The removal of the ‘bus man’s hut’ and a taxi shelter/trolley bay;
  • Using the reallocated road reservation for the installation of new high quality seating, and planters for shrubs and trees.

The works will be in place 24hrs per day, 7 days a week for the 12-month trial period. This initiative will commence after Sunday 14th of June 2026 with the trial currently scheduled to conclude on Monday 14th of June 2027.
