Incompatibility of a cycle path and a public park

Ábhair:
Active recreation and open space

The Glen is situated between two populous areas on the north side of the city. A cycle path will inevitably create a short cut between these so that it will be reasonable to expect a high volumn of cycle traffic through the park, both motorised and pedal power. This creates a conflict with the ethos of a park which should be a place of relaxation and retreat in a safe environment.

Secondly, the nature of the Glen means that from about half way through it, the path is restricted in width by the hill on one side and the water on the other. This converges into a bottleneck where the water crosses under the road about three quarters way through at the place popularly called 'the Hatch'. A cycle path will eat up at least half of the walking space along this path, making it dangerous for pedestrians who, unlike on city thoroughfares, walk through a park in a meandering fashion, stopping, chatting, looking about or disentangling dog leads and so forth. In other words, with less attention than one would otherwise be expected to exercise on a public road.

Thirdly, the gradient from mid-way through the Glen descends at a significant rate This would cause cyclists to speed up, whether it was their intention or not. If travelling westwards, there is a futher impetus to speed up to gain momentum to carry a cyclist up the steep incline towards the ring road. If travelling eastwards a similar impetus encourages a cyclist to go faster at the beginning of the route to carry them up through the Glen. Considering the narrowness of the path, there would be inevitable conflict between pedestrians and cyclists.

Therefore, I consider the Glen an inappropriate location for a cycle path and would be a source of annoyance and nuisance in what is supposed to be a place of relaxation.
