Need for a detailed Tree Policy

Over the past decades, there has been a noticeable decline in tree cover within Cork City.

In comparison with other European cities of similar size, there are relatively few urban trees. Large numbers of mature trees were lost during recent storms, and these have not been replaced.

Open green spaces were proved invaluable during the recent pandemic. Other European cities are engaged in urgent urban tree planting campaigns to help provide shade during heatwaves, and with a growing number of apartments, Cork needs to follow suit with a detailed tree planting strategy and Policy document.

Appointment of a Biodiversity Officer.

In recent months, there has been considerable publicity relating to the lack of expertise at Local Authority level in key areas of biodiversity. As Ireland's second largest city, Cork urgently needs to appoint suitably qualified individuals to this role.
