The Masterplan for the proposed park is available at https://www.corkcity.ie/en/north-west-city-park/.

The proposal is a significant one for Cork City, and we appreciate you taking some time to review the plan and the documents.

The Design Team would like your feedback on how the Masterplan provides opportunities for sports and physical recreation, suppports active movement such as walking, cycling, wheeling or running, contributes to community wellbeing and quality of life, recognises and respects local heritage, and how the proposal protects and enhances natural habitats.

Sport and Recreation (required field)

The Park has been designed as a destination for sport, play and outdoor activity. A central ambition is to provide inclusive and accessible opportunities for people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities to participate in physical activity within a safe, attractive natural setting. The proposal embeds recreation throughout the park rather than concentrated in a single location. The park includes playgrounds and plays-spaces, sports pitches, basketball and tennis courts, multi-use games areas, outdoor fitness zones, calisthenics equipment, pump tracks and informal activity areas that cater for all ages and abilities. A key feature is the Adventure Park, which will provide mountain biking, cycling trails, adventure play and outdoor challenges that encourage active recreation and skill development. Family-friendly amenities, walking routes and social spaces further support year-round use.

Active Movement (required field)

Active movement is central to the proposal. A comprehensive network of paths will connect neighbourhoods, schools, recreation facilities and natural areas, making it easier and more enjoyable to walk, cycle, wheel and run throughout the park. The park will provide approximately 20km of walking trails and cycling routes, including 8km of universally accessible pathways suitable for people of varying ages and abilities. Dedicated facilities, including learn-to-cycle areas, pump tracks and fitness routes, encourage active travel and recreation. By linking with wider transport and active travel networks, the proposal will promote sustainable travel choices while encouraging everyday physical activity and improved connectivity across the area.

Community Life (required field)

The proposal has been designed to create a welcoming, inclusive and accessible public space that supports recreation, social interaction, learning and connection with nature. The park will provide opportunities to participate in community life close to where they live. A diverse range of facilities, including play areas, sports spaces, walking and cycling routes, community gathering areas and the proposed Urban Farm, will encourage healthy lifestyles and foster social connections. The park also creates opportunities for education, volunteering, cultural activities and intergenerational engagement, helping to build on the already strong communities of the North West area.

Culture and Heritage (required field)

The proposal has been shaped by local history, community knowledge and cultural identity. Through extensive engagement, local stories, traditions and heritage assets have been captured and incorporated into the park's masterplan. The park celebrates the area's heritage and protects important features such as Nash's Boreen, the Monk's Trail and the Croppy Boy Way, while recognising the traditional sports of bowling and hunting. Interpretation, storytelling, public art and educational opportunities will bring connection to the area's history, fostering a strong sense of place, community pride and appreciation of local heritage for future generations.

Nature and Ecology (required field)

The proposal places biodiversity and ecological enhancement as the foundation of the park's design. Existing habitats, including the existing hedgerows, the River Bride corridor, woodlands and grasslands will be protected and strengthened through habitat restoration and ecological connectivity. Expanded hedgerows, new wetlands, meadows, wet woodland and natural grassland habitats will increase biodiversity, support wildlife and improve climate resilience. Nature-based drainage features such as swales and wetlands will enhance water quality and natural flood management. Carefully designed trails, habitat buffers and wildlife-friendly infrastructure will allow people to enjoy the park while minimising disturbance to sensitive areas. The result will be a richer, more resilient landscape that benefits both nature and the community.
