The Crawford Gallery are about to commence works on a major redevelopment which will include the relocation its main entrance to Emmett Place. Following this work and to complement the redeveloped gallery, Cork City Council are proposing to carry out upgrading and enhancement work on Emmett Place and surrounding areas.
The aim of the proposal is to enhance the existing public realm, improve accessibility, extend the pedestrianisation of Emmett Place and create a flexible people centred civic space suitable for temporary events whilst maintaining as much of the existing fabric as possible.
To achieve these aims it will be necessary to make the following modifications: -
Extend the pedestrianisation of Emmett Place from Opera Lane end to Lavitts Quay. Access will be permitted on Emmett Place to facilitate major deliveries to the Crawford Gallery, for temporary events, emergencies and servicing.
Realignment of the pavement on Lavitts Quay, including the removal of the existing set down area at the northern end of Emmett Place.
Upgrade of the footways on Lavitts Quay from St Patricks St to Half Moon Street.
Realignment of the carriageway from Half Moon Street/Academy St towards Drawbridge Street to improve functionality.
Construction of raised planters with seating to the northern and southern ends of Emmett Place and the inclusion of visual screen to front of the planter on Lavitt's Quay to enhance sense of enclosure of the civic space
Decluttering of the existing area with the removal of redundant street furniture such as bollards and road signage etc and the relocation of bicycle stands to the edges of the space.
The provision of raised planters with seating at the eastern railing of the Crawford Gallery.
The relocation of the existing loading bay on Emmett Place to its southern end.
Renovation and upgrade of the existing public lighting.
The project will be constructed following completion of the redevelopment of the Crawford Gallery. The anticipated start date is 2027.
The City Council will work closely with affected parties to ensure the safe and efficient movement of pedestrians, cyclists, deliveries and other vehicles during the construction phase.
Closing date for all submissions is on Tuesday the 10th January 2025 at 4pm.
