Riverstown Terminus

Notice Under Section 38 of the Road Traffic Act 1994

Pursuant to the provisions of Section 38 of the Road Traffic Act 1994, Cork City Council hereby gives notice of its intention to carry out the following traffic management measures in the interest of the safety and convenience of road users.

Riverstown Terminus

As part of the rollout of the new improved bus network for Cork, a new 2a service from MTU to Glanmire will be introduced to significantly enhance connections between Glanmire, Mayfield the city centre. It will be terminating at Riverstown and new terminal capacity is required.

It is proposed to enhance the provision of public bus services by introducing two new bus stops/stands on Hazelwood Road.  The designs will coordinate with the Glanmire Roads Improvement Scheme active travel improvements, with the proposed westbound cycle lane being converted to a cycle track and shared boarding/alighting area in the vicinity of the bus stop/stands.

The main elements of the proposed works are:

  • Provide a westbound bus stand/stop in a layby on Hazelwood Road, with a shared boarding zone and cycle track and footway to the rear.
  • Widen Hazelwood Centre eastern access road to accommodate bus left-turn in from Hazelwood Road, whilst maintaining the current two-lane exit, realigning the eastern footway to suit.
  • Provide eastbound in-line bus stop on Hazelwood Road.
  • Modify the cycle lane proposed under the Glanmire Roads Improvement Scheme to tie in with proposals.
  • Renewal/replacement of other road drainage, road signage and road markings as might be necessary.
  • All other associated ancillary site works.

In accordance with the Habitats Directive, an Appropriate Assessment (AA) Screening has been carried out for the project, in relation to any potential impacts upon any Natura 2000 sites, including the Cork Harbour SPA (004030), the Great Island Channel SAC (001058) and the Blackwater River (Cork/Waterford) SAC. The findings of the AA screening concluded that no significant effects on any Natura 2000 sites are likely and it was not necessary to undertake any further stage of the Appropriate Assessment process.

In addition, the proposed project has been screened to determine whether an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is required and it has been concluded that the proposed development would not be likely to have a significant effect on the environment and that the preparation and submission of an environmental impact report is not therefore required.

Details of the proposed works including an Appropriate Assessment screening report and Environmental Impact Assessment screening report are available for inspection online at https://consult.corkcity.ie, at Reception Desk, Cork City Council, City Hall, Anglesea Street, Cork on working days from Friday 27th October 2023 to Friday 15th December 2023 between 10.00 a.m. and 4.00 p.m.

Any observations in relation to this proposal should be made electronically through https://consult.corkcity.ie/en/or forwarded in an envelope marked “Riverstown Terminus” to Senior Engineer, Infrastructure Development, City Hall, Anglesea Street, Cork. The final date for submissions is 5.00 p.m. on Friday 15th December 2023.

Accordingly, they will be included in the minutes of that meeting and may appear in the public domain.
