Litir Chumhdaigh

As a resident of this area, I would like to share some local expertise that this area is one of the few areas near Cork City that is rich in native woodlands and biodiversity. Foxes, hedgehogs, badgers, squirrels, and huge numbers of birds including migratory and rare birds such as the Jay frequent here every year. This area also has a stream and a steep slope making it more suitable to fit into the city hinterland than suitable residential neighbourhood. In fact, this area would be more suited to increasing the nearby native woodland than it would urban development and it doubles as an important flightpath and safe passage for planes landing in Cork Airport. This small patch of biodiversity is one of the reasons we moved here as we were told the area would not be developed. The walkway nearby connecting Spur Hill and Lehenaghmore has been enjoyed by our community for generations and is largely incompatible with residential proximity as privacy and safety fears would result in conflict making some parts of these zones largely unsuitable to development. This is an area of outstanding natural beauty that would be severely negatively impacted by development that would decrease the value of our property and quality of life as children need a safe area to play and everyone needs a connection to nature and biodiversity which these areas are providing.

Príomh-thuairim:

Areas of important biodiversity conservation are not only excluded from the zoning plans, but areas of important habitat are wrongly classified as suitable neighbourhood.

Príomh-iarratais:

We would like to see parts of Map 15 around Fernwood Crescent and Lehenaghmore reclassified as important biodiversity habitats. Many parts of this area are incompatible with urban development.

Main reasons:

There are important areas here rich in native woodlands and biodiversity. Parts of this area are incompatible with urban development. Plans to increase nature and biodiversity conservation should be included in the plan and special consideration should be given to the areas mentioned.
