Litir Chumhdaigh

My name is Ryan Mac Sweeney and I am from Cork. My motivation for this submission is that there are a lot of derelict sites in Cork City Centre which in the middle of a housing crisis could be used for housing. There is a severe shortage of housing in Cork City especially the city centre and even though several student accommodation developments are either in planning or under construction I would like if there was more housing for ordinary working people especially low and middle income earners. With a large number of new office developmets either in planning or under construction in Cork City there is going to be a pent up demand for housing especially young professionals in their 20s and early 30s who are locked out of the housing market.

More afforadable housing for everyone

I would like to see more city centre housing especially apartments as there have not been any new apartments built in the city centre since 2008 and the population has increased significantly since then. Despite there being a boom in new student accomodation developments in recent years there have not been any new apartments for ordinary working people. Its an absoulte disgrace that since 2008 that has been a sing new apartment complex built in the city centre. Most European cities have their citizens living in apartmenst in the city centre and Cork doesnt. In addition I would like to see more high rise developments built in the city centre with the sky scrapers such as the Prisim by the bus station, the former Cork Harbour Comissioners development on Custom House Quay as well as the new South Link Tower by the Elysian and the tower on Jacobs Island as well the tower on the site of the former Sextant Bar on Albert Quay all of which have been green lit but construction has not even started on any one of them. These high density developments have the potential to accomodate over 1 million people. I would like to add that the apartment development on the Horgans Quay site next to Kent Station has also not started yet despite the Penrose Dock office development next door almost fully let and work already commencing on the second and third block of the new office development on site with Apple set to occupy one of those buildings.
